In the late 1800's - mid 1900's, Manipuri ponies of India were in high demand by British and Indian polo players. They are smaller than most breeds, usually between 11-13 hands, and are sadly now declining in number.

Thoroughbreds, some of the most versatile horses out there, are commonly used to play polo. Targeted breeding has given these horses the stamina to run long distances at high speeds. Most polo ponies in the US are partially Thoroughbred. The most commonly occurring polo pony is a cross between a Thoroughbred and a Quarter Horse. This combines the speed of the Thoroughbred with the quick turns of the Quarter Horse.

In Argentina, where polo is more prevalent, they often cross Thoroughbreds with Criollos, a breed native to Argentina. Criollos, who also turn quickly, are bred for endurance. These horses are small and strong, a winning combination.
